Note: The following trainings meet the 6 hours Licensure and Certification requirement for Residential Facility Class 2 and Class 3 providers relevant to working with persons with a behavioral health disorder.

  • Personal Care Services and Assistance with Self-Administration of Medication
    • The Ohio Adult Care Facilities Association is excited to announce that we will be offering two online opportunities for Residential Facility operators and staff to attend the Personal Care Services and Assistance with Self Administration of Medication training. These trainings will be in a live webinar and will be presented by Dr. Wendy Umberger.Dr. Umberger has been on the faculty of Kent State University College of Nursing since 2002 and is currently the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs. She is certified as a psychiatric mental health advanced practice nurse since 1987 and has over 30 years of advanced practice nursing experience in the community. Dr. Umberger’s clinical expertise is with patients and families experiencing mental illness who also have co-morbid chronic diseases such as chronic pain and those who are diagnosed with severe and persistent mental illness.

  • Mental Illness 101
    • The family dynamic created in group living is greatly impacted when family members have a serious mental illness. Operators and staff of residential facilities (ACF’s) are the family of those living in their homes, many who are struggling with serious mental illness. Understanding the impact of these illnesses in terms of the physical, emotional and symptomatic behaviors can reduce tension in the family dynamic. This training will provide those attending with a recognition of the impact of the illness, the inability to control some behaviors and techniques to most effectively dealing with the dynamics of mental illness in their home. This training will provide information to help recognize behaviors as symptoms and to respond appropriately, will improve communications with clients by utilizing techniques offered in the training, and will create a more stable home environment as a result of increased understanding and symptom management. This is a great training for those providers and staff new to mental health or who are looking to review what they have already learned. This 6 hour training is broken up into 3 modules (2 hours each). You will need to register only once and attend all 3 modules to receive 6 hours of mental health training for Residential Facility Class 2 licensure and certification.

  • Crisis Intervention and De-Escalation
    • Residential Facility Class 2 (Adult Care Facilities) staff members and other housing providers who treat individuals suffering from mental illness in out of home facilities require skills that bring calm while managing mental health crises and aggressive behaviors while maintaining a safe treatment environment. This requires knowledge of best practices in crisis management with knowledge of legal and state mandated resources. This training focuses on creating a safe environment and providing for an understanding of risk behaviors, behavioral escalation, and trauma and violence prevention. A “core strategy” approach which centers on proactive de-escalation, data driven, and client centered interventions, debriefing and crisis/safety planning. This 6 hour training is broken up into 3 modules (2 hours each). You will need to register only once and attend all 3 modules to receive 6 hours of mental health training for Residential Facility Class 2 licensure and certification.

  • Working with Someone who has a Mental Illness
    • Working with Individuals with Mental Illness can be a challenge and sometimes complex. Dr. Umberger has put together an excellent curriculum on working with some of our most vulnerable individuals. In this training, the attendee will gain insight into how genes and environment interact to produce mental illness. In addition, attendees will be able to identify five ways to build trusting relationships with residents diagnosed with severe mental illness and best practices on working with various mental health diagnoses.

  • Schizophrenia Training
    • The presentation will describe DSM 5 of Thought Disorders with an emphasis on Schizophrenia. The illness, its prevalence, its signs and symptoms and behavioral characteristics, as well as treatment and care interventions and hope for the future.

  • Alzheimer’s and Dementia Training
    • Overview of Alzheimer’s and Dementia with a focus on Prevalence and impact, Diagnosis, Symptoms and Stages, Early onset of the illness, Research and Treatment and Care. This is a great course for housing providers that serve the aging in place population.

  • Mood Disorders
    • The Presentation will describe DSM 5 Thought Disorders with emphasis on Major Depressive Disorder, Bipolar Disorders and Cyclothymia. Each disorder will be presented with its prevalence, signs and symptoms and behavioral characteristics as well as treatment and care considerations and hope for the future.

Webinar Training Protocols

We understand that COVID-19 has significantly impacted how we all do business both in your homes and at the State level. As such, we are not currently offering in-person training for housing providers. As many of you know, we have been working at getting our FREE trainings up and running on the GoToWebinar platform. With this large audience now attending our webinar-based training, it has come to our attention, that we need to set some Webinar Training Protocols.

As we are looking to offer quality training in a similar learning environment to in-person training, we ask that you attend and participate as you would at an in-person training in order to receive a certificate of attendance to satisfy licensure requirements. This means engaging with the presenter with questions and comments, staying present, and participating as you would for in-person training.

The following changes have been made to accommodate the large audience of attendees, to ensure a quality training experience, and to make this an engaging experience for all:

  1. From this point forward, all attendees will be required to log on through a computer, not a phone. If your computer does not offer audio, you will have an option to call in for audio ONCE you are logged in to your computer using the registration confirmation provided.  We are asking for your full cooperation with this if you would like to receive a Certificate of Attendance. Please note that if you choose to use a phone and are not logged on correctly, you will not get credit for the class, we will be firm with this requirement. If you do not have access to a computer, please contact your surveyor to figure out an alternate way to receive your required mental health training hours.

  1. Please set aside time in your day to focus your full attention on the webinar, as you would in a face-to-face training.

  1. Each person needs to be registered with their own unique email and each person must be logged into a different computer. You will know that you registered the person correctly if you receive a confirmation email from OhioMHAS Web Conference. If you do not receive that confirmation, assume that you have used a duplicate email or that there was a typo in that email. The confirmation email is sent right after you register, the day before the training and again an hour before the training. You will need that confirmation email to log on to the webinar. There are no exceptions to this. Instructions will be sent by Desiree Bell, a day or two before the event with instructions on how to log on. If you have had trouble in the past or have not logged on before, we urge you to take the time to read those instructions.

  1. Mental Health 101 training and the Crisis Intervention and De-Escalation training, have been broken down into three-2 hour modules. This means that when you sign up once, you will automatically sign up for all 3 modules. The modules will be held for 3 consecutive weeks on the same day and time each week (for two hours).  To receive a Certificate of Attendance for 6 hours of Mental Health Credits you will need to attend all 3 modules for the duration of the training and are logged on correctly through your computer. You only need to register and attend one of the 6 hour courses to meet the requirements for licensure.

Once the training series is completed PLEASE allow 3 weeks to receive your certificate. The Certificates will be emailed to the address with which you were registered. Please note that because we are working remotely, we have no ability to mail you a Certificate.
